Cantamath

Message from the President of the Canterbury Mathematical Association

Welcome to Cantamath 2010, the 39th annual Cantamath competition since 1972.

Cantamath is an important and exciting part of the school calendar for many teachers and students. It provides an opportunity for students to explore the wide world of mathematics and display their work to a Canterbury audience. Each year there are always new and fresh ideas, along with top quality work and careful presentation. The theme this year is Maths in Structures and it’s now time to start to consider what you would like to enter. What can you make, what could you write and most important what issues or topics relating to the theme have significance from a mathematical perspective. We are very excited to be extending this competition into Year 6 classrooms.

Behind the scenes, much work is already being done to ensure the success of the competition. Special thanks to the Organising Committee and the many volunteers who make the event possible. Their efforts in the planning, preparation and running of the event are immense and greatly appreciated. The CMA is also grateful for the generous financial support of the sponsors – Casio, Trimble and Every Educaid, Mathletics and the University of Canterbury. Such an event would not take place without their support.

In anticipation, I would like to thank the primary, intermediate and secondary teachers and also the University of Canterbury College of Education and the New Zealand Graduate School of Education student teachers, who will come forward in August to assist in the organisation of the Town Hall displays and teams’ competitions.

The interest, energy and enthusiasm for mathematics created by Cantamath each year is truly unique. It is the CMA’s flagship event and one which very successfully involves hundreds of students, teachers and parents. So please make the most of it, enjoy the challenge, participate, compete and discover something new!
